Petmate Pet Porter vs Vari Kennel: Which Plastic Crate Fits?

Quick answer

Choose the Aspen Pet Pet Porter if you need a wider range of sizes and a crate that meets most airline requirements; choose the Fashion Vari Kennel if you want a low-cost, small-size crate for housebreaking, puppies, or cats.

Ventilation and security features

Both crates use an easy-open squeeze latch door, but they differ in airflow design. The Pet Porter provides healthy airflow through side vents, while the Vari Kennel offers 360-degree air flow ventilation. For a pet that runs warm or travels in a car, the Vari Kennel’s wraparound ventilation may be an advantage. The Pet Porter’s side vents are sufficient for typical home and travel use, but they are not described as 360-degree.

The Vari Kennel also includes an interior moat to keep pets dry and tamper-proof holes. Those features matter for housebreaking accidents and for securing the crate during transport. The Pet Porter does not list an interior moat or tamper-proof holes in the supplied facts, so if those are priorities, the Vari Kennel is the clearer choice.

Size range and travel suitability

The Pet Porter is available in a variety of sizes and meets most air travel requirements—but you must confirm with your specific airline before flying. That makes it the more flexible option for growing pets or for owners who may fly. The Vari Kennel comes in two small sizes only, ideal for puppies, small dogs, or cats. If you need a crate for a medium or large dog, the Vari Kennel will not fit.

Because the Pet Porter’s interior dimensions are listed (28 inches for the size referenced), you can measure your pet and compare. The Vari Kennel’s small sizes are best suited to pets that will stay small. Neither crate is guaranteed for every airline, so always verify carrier rules directly.

Cost and construction trade-offs

The Fashion Vari Kennel is the lower-cost option, but it is limited to small sizes and fashion colors. The Pet Porter costs more but offers a broader size selection and air-travel compatibility. Both feature tough durable construction, so the main trade-off is size range and travel flexibility versus price and small-pet focus.

If you are housebreaking a puppy or need a temporary crate for a cat, the Vari Kennel’s low price and included moat make it practical. If you plan to travel by air or have a dog that will outgrow a small crate, the Pet Porter’s size variety and airline-friendly design are worth the higher cost.

Key trade-offs to weigh

• Size range vs. small-pet focus: The Pet Porter offers multiple sizes, while the Vari Kennel comes in only two small sizes. If your pet is or will be larger than a small dog, the Vari Kennel is not an option. Measure your pet’s length and height, then compare to the Pet Porter’s interior dimensions before buying.
• Air travel readiness vs. budget: The Pet Porter meets most airline requirements (verify with your airline), while the Vari Kennel is not described as airline-compliant. The Vari Kennel costs less but is limited to small pets and ground use. If flying is possible, choose the Pet Porter and confirm with your airline; otherwise the Vari Kennel saves money for small pets.
• Ventilation and accident management: The Vari Kennel provides 360-degree ventilation and an interior moat to keep pets dry; the Pet Porter has side vents but no listed moat. For puppies in training or pets prone to spills, the Vari Kennel’s design is more forgiving. For housebreaking or messy travelers, the Vari Kennel’s moat and wraparound airflow are practical advantages.
